IEEE Service and Organization Activity

Prof. Fortino is IEEE Senior Member. Specifically, he is member of the Computer Society, the Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC) Society, and the Communications Society. Moreover, he is also member of the IoT initiative.

He is very active in the SMC society where he serves as:

  • Member-at-large of the Board-of-Governors (BoG), first term 2018-2020; reconfirmed for the second term 2021-2023;
  • IEEE SMC Italian Chapter Chair since 2016;
  • Co-founding co-chair of the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on “Interactive and Wearable Computing and Devices”;
  • Active members of the following technical committees:
    • Computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design (CSCWD)
    • Distributed Intelligent Systems (DIS),
    • Environmental Sensing, Networking and Decision-Making (ESND) *founding member*.
  • Member of the Publication Committee of IEEE SMCS (since 2017).
  • Member of SMCS HMS Committee (since 2019).

In 2020, he received the Outstanding Chapter Award as Chair of the Italy SMC Chapter.

He was in the IEEE Press Editorial Board of Governors (2016-2018 term), being very active in launching new initiative involving IEEE Book series. In 2018, he founded the brand new IEEE Book series on Human-Machine Systems and performed the role of connecting IEEE Press with IEEE SMCS. The IEEE Book series on Human-Machine Systems is endorsed by the SMCS.

In the IEEE Systems council he is co-founder and co-chair of the Hyper-Intelligence Technical Committee.

In the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMB) Society, he is a committee member of Wearable Biomedical Sensors and Systems Technical Committee ( WBSS TC): his main activity involves the promotion of research and events on middleware for BSN systems.

In the IEEE Communications Society, he is the founding member of IEEE SIG on Big Data for Healthcare, Medicine and Biology.

In the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, he is member of the Smart World Technical Committee.

In the IEEE Standards Association, IEEE Standards Healthcare-Life Science Platform, he is invited member of Wearables & Medical IoT Intelligence & Interoperability (WAMIII) Program.

Affiliation in other technical societies

He is member of ACM since 2002 and was member of IFAC, SCS, ISCA, Eurosis, etc. He is fellow of the Overseas Chinese International Biomedical Engineering Society.
